The Guide to ACT Math: Skip the Prep Courses [Print Replica] Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 82 ratings

Are your scores stuck?  Are you preparing to take the ACT test for the first time and you don't know where to start?  Forget the idea that the ACT Math is just "something you can't improve on."  This book is the blueprint for YOUR ACT prep success.

It's a workbook, prep course, and a math review all in one

Whether the test is tomorrow and you need a crash course or months from now and you need a review, the book will help! This step-by-step guide covers every math topic on the ACT. The book can tell you what you need to cover, what strategies to use, and how you will succeed.

How is this book different?  It's designed to be a replacement for prep courses. Every topic in the book is connected to others through links--to allow you to easily jump between skills. You'll find videos on every topic, and really specific, concentrated practice problems with incredibly detailed explanations. Not only that, it features more content, and a lot more problems, than most online courses.

It's the most comprehensive ACT Math book available, devoting more time and more examples to each topic than any other. Not only that, but it doesn't read like a textbook. Skip the dense black and white blocks of text and equations. This book is colorful, full of diagrams, and thought bubbles to allow you to clearly follow example problems, without giving you a headache.

  • What about strategy?  Strategy is EVERYWHERE in this book.  It's in every topic, in each section, and in it's own chapter.
  • What about your section management and other skills?  Use the book to discover critical hacks for your preparation and section management.
  • How do you practice? Each topic has it's own set of practice problems tailored to the skills you need on test day.  Treat the practice problems like a super-focused, detailed problem book.

  • How do you target what you need?  The book has six pre-tests covering specific content that will identify the topics you need to see. The solutions are linked to the sections of the book.  You'll also find out how to breakdown your ACT score report and make that information a help.

  • How do you work on your math skills?  This book is designed for meaningful practice.  Each topic is covered individually, with page after page of material and example problems and each topic has it's own videos.  At the end, you'll find the skills that tie into what you just worked.
  • Use the built in Kindle Textbook features to create your own math cheat sheet, take notes, and navigate topics.

The Features

  • 400+ ACT math practice questions with step-by-step solutions
  • 90+ Videos covering each topic
  • Comprehensive strategy section and strategy for each question type
  • Guide for translating your ACT score report to the topics you need
  • Access to printable geometry problems
  • Access to an easy to use math ACT formula sheet
  • Section detailing how to practice, how to prepare, and insight into the weaknesses of the ACT (how the testmakers are handcuffed).

I work as a test prep tutor and admissions counselor for high school and college students. In that capacity, I've worked with hundreds of students all with different hopes, fears, goals, and strengths. I love my job.

Every year I get to help a new bunch of students take their best test, apply, and get accepted to wonderful colleges and graduate schools. I also routinely work with students who have physical impairments, or learning problems. It's an exciting time of life, full of possibility, and I love helping students through it.

I wrote "How to Graduate College in 4 Years" because no one had. Students need a practical guide to navigate college and save themselves time, money, and frustration. I want students to graduate in four years, but--as I say in the marketing stuff--surviving college is insufficient. I see college as a launchpad, where students establish the habits and priorities that will define their personal and professional lives.

I wrote "ACT Math the Guide" because I wasn't happy with the prep books available for the Math section of the ACT. They rushed through reviewing the math and didn't offer enough concentrated practice to allow students to learn the skills. So, I started writing my own. I wanted to write a book that could help students of all levels, with all educational backgrounds, and with all score objectives.

I live in Pittsburgh with my daughter Samantha and our dog (teaching assistant) Harper. I'm always happy to answer questions for free, and I can be reached through my website: http://thetestguy.com/contact.html

This is a wonderful book to help with the Math section of the ACT. It is organized very well and there is even a video explanation of each kind of problem. Jacob really breaks the problems down and makes it easy to understand. He also offers a free consultation for tutoring, which we took advantage of. My daughter loved him and we ended up hiring him as her ACT tutor. I was VERY surprised at how reasonable his rates were. My daughter increased her Math score from a 25 on the April test to a 29 on the June test! I think if we had the discipline to just work the book, we wouldn't have needed the tutoring, but since math was my daughter's worst subject by far, and keeping her from getting significant scholarships, the tutoring was well worth it! My daughter did end up with a 32 on the June test, and I credit Jacob (and my daughter's hard work) for that!

Wanted a book that organized ACT questions into topics to help my daughter study for the math section of the ACT. I was becoming worried that I would have to do it myself when I found this book. This book provides numerous ACT questions for each topic covered on the ACT. It also explains the math concepts needed for each topic, provides solutions for each question, and includes strategy suggestions. Students are able to focus on the topics they need to review. (And working through a set of questions on one math topic at a time is a far superior study approach to what seems to be the standard method of just doing one old test after another.) If you buy this book, do go to the website and request the errata list (it's very short but useful).

As the owner of a few other ACT Math prep guides, I have to say that Jacob Brezinski's "ACT Math: The Guide" blows all others out of the water.

The guide is set up into six sections, which all include 'Pre-Tests' that allow you to better understand your strengths and weaknesses before you dive into the actual material.

Brezinski's streamlined approach allows students to get the most bang for their test-prep buck, as it eliminates overstudying the material you know and understudying the material you don't know.

I have personally worked one on one with Jacob, and I have to say that he is without a doubt one of the best at what he does. He has helped me learn more about math in the past month than I have learned in the past three or four years. You can reach Jacob for tutoring inquiries by emailing jacob@thetestguy.com.

All in all, I would highly recommend this guide to anyone looking to crack the math section of the ACT once and for all.

Too many errors. I started with the pre-tests, and there were errors there-especially when it said to look at the diagram(or graph or table). There was no diagram, this happened multiple times. After I took the pre-test and went to my first unit to review ( probability) 2 out of the 8 answers were incorrect! What do you think the probability is that there are more errors in the book?Update 1/22/18 - Although the concept of the book with videos is great, the careless errors keep me from recommending the book. We (my son will be taking the ACT) are still not that far into the book and continue to find numerous errors. In the DATA section, the graph totals only 1800, but the question states 2000! This affects 3 out the total 5 questions in this section and the "detailed" answers continue with this erroneous information. In another section, it asks for the "equivalent", but there are 2 equivalent functions in the answers choices- proven with a graphing calculator (we spent time analyzing this question). The book's "correct" answer was the simplified function; however, since the question did NOT specify any domain restrictions, this answer could actually be considered incorrect. When we analyze our answers (which is important to do when studying for the ACT) we now end up questioning ourselves and the reliability of this book - which is not something you want to do when studying for the ACT.

Even after a prep course, my child was struggling with the math portion of the ACT. Professor Brezinski's guide was straightforward, intuitive and helped my child raise her score on the ACT enough to give her a competitive score for the schools she was most interested. Beyond that, it gave her confidence on test day as she could take the test without dread of the math portion.

This guide was a total game changer.

I am really puzzled as to the high ratings and favorable reviews for this study guide. I really wanted to like it as it had the potential to help several of my ACT prep students. But the errors and problems start early with unnumbered pages and escalate from there. There are numerous math errors in addition to misspelled words and typos. In addition, there are constant grammatical errors (it's a comma splice festival). This is both confusing and unhelpful for an ACT prep student who is trying to raise their score on the English section as well and it easily influenced by poor grammar. I tried this study guide with one student. I won't use it again. The author's best bet is to hire an editor for a second edition; that might have potential.

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Thank you Jacob for helping me beyond the ACT. It is an insightful prep book that has all the practice math problems at your disposal and extra videos in case you should need it. Jacob has helped me with not just prepping for the ACT, but with Calculus, college essays and just interesting life advice in general. I wish there could be more than 5 stars, but do take advantage of everything that is offered in this hefty prep book! I would also follow his advice in the beginning and form your own studying plan because there really is almost every math topic available and so I started with pre-algebra first. It helped me freshen up on my old math skills that I forgot a long time ago.
