I have used a Barron's SAT until the pages run ragged because I teach standardized testing.
This is very useable and has many sections which develop understanding of the test, how to increase skills, plus practice tests.
I have begun asking students who have trouble with the regular SAT to start with this book.
These are very challenging tests, so students should buy the book early!
Given my druthers, the test parts would be perforated to make them easy to pull out...

We just received this book, so I cannot attest to higher scores, but it really like the way it is written in an entertaining format that makes it more appealing for my daughter to read. I found the essay section helpful for her current schoolwork and the whole book makes for a good review of math and reading. I also found the tips to be helpful, especially for a child who has had little standardized test experience. Having used the Cardinal book, I like this one much better. Like the Cardinal book, there are practice problems, but there is a great deal of explanation, too. The book is visually much more appealing. And this book has the benefit of including actual practice tests. The Cardinal book may include more drill practice, but if you only want to buy one, I suggest this one.

The practice test was WAY easier than the real thing. My son consistently got one to two wrong on the math portion, while he missed a total of seven on the real exam. I bought two other prep test booklets and the Barron's was by far the best overall, but the math portion in the practice exams I feel was not adequate in preparing my son for the actual test. The rest was top-notch! Especially the essay prompts, as they were more like the "real thing" than any other book we looked at or bought.
