I had no experience with anything related to networking, subnetting, routing, or anything. This book is written in such a format that I was able to learn rapidly.

The book is being used in Introduction to networking at University of Houston-Clear Lake, and Jian Lin uses the textbook well. Maybe it's just the professor, but I feel the book is easy to read, use as a reference, and makes learning easy.

The end of Chapter questions are difficult, but all the answers are included at the end of each chapter (explaining the reasons for the answer and why the incorrect answers are incorrect). I understand that the CCNA Certification isn't easy so hopefully studying this book will make it easier.

I came across the CCNA book on Amazon first, and decided to buy it after looking through the reviews. I have owned some of the Cisco press books, and they worked very well as pillows for me, because I used to sleep on them every single time I opened them. But I absolutely love this book. It not only helped me pass my CCNA but contains a wealth of information that's hard to find in the same place, at the same time. It is a very easy read and there is some humor which definitely helps when you are reading 800 pages and want to concentrate. I have also read his CCENT book and I like that one too....I highly recommend this book for CCNA exams.

I have the 5th, 6th, and recently purchased the 7th. Based on the number of editions I own, it should be an indicator as to how long I've procrastinated to actually study and finally get certified, but I have done it. Needless to say, I've only thoroughly read a third of the 6th and read the 7th thoroughly from start to finish. Just like with any study material, depending on the style of writing, it may have certain limitations, strengths and or weaknesses. I will do my best to highlight what I believe this book does well and perhaps what it could improve on. Also, note that if you have the ability to purchase a second book (i.e. the Cisco press certification library), I personally believe it will help in filling in any gaps in material not thoroughly covered by this book.

Strengths:
1 book stop shop to cover all CCNA (640-802) exam objectives; all chapters are organized in sequence to where you can literally read from the beginning to end, without having to jump around. If your goal and objective is to take one test and become certified in one shot, this book is a must have as its tailored, organized, around that one test, although it does cover the material in both the ICND-1 and ICND-2.

A relatively "short" read for a book covering so many topics. This is one of those intangibles that could be really helpful for believing that getting through the book is really doable. Sometimes a really thick book or in some cases a pair of thick books can seem very intimidating as you think of how long it will take to get through them.

Chapters covering fundamental material such as Internetworking, Ethernet, as well as the OSI layers & TCP/IP, is covered in well and in depth needed for the exam and just in general for real world networking

Chapters for IP addressing and Subnetting: Probably the strongest and the most valuable content of the book and what sets this book and Mr. Lammle apart. The techniques and shortcuts on memorizing certain things to help you subnet in your head quickly. I use these methods today on a regular basis. Its the BEST method I have found for subnetting and it simply works. The subnetting material in this book alone is worth purchasing the book.

Wireless chapter and ipv6.

Written and Lab exercises at end of chapters to ensure you grasp the material. Hands-on practice, for most, really help solidify the information and Todd does a good job of including Lab exercises for most chapters

You will learn from this book that Lammle likes to be brief and and not over complicate any topic. He explains most topics as in they are easy and straight forward. In reality, most things are pretty easy and straight forward

Weaknesses:

Frame-relay I felt was not covered very well nor was it explained very well. For example regarding DLCI addressing. Yes, DLCI's are always only locally significant but it didn't go into the examples of local vs global and how do decipher what addressing is used if you are viewing a diagram and its not specified, etc. As well as it left out examples of multipoint interface configurations and different frame-relay topologies. Basically, to me, this chapter left me with more questions coming out of it than going into it.

As some have said, the writing style of this book is of the conversational type, which is fine when reading from start to finish but it makes it difficult to quickly reference information you may want to retouch on later on, because you have to sort through sentences and and sentences at times to find specifically something you are looking for, such as a specific command, which could be like finding a needle in a haystack

The outputs from cli are sort of bunched in between through the chapters and not organized as well. Again, I found it difficult having to reference material previously read. Sometimes certain material could seem scattered and not as well organized as it could have been.

Overall the book delivers, and I as I mentioned the subnetting material in the book is gold and makes it worth the purchase alone, but I strongly recommend to not rely on only one source for preparation of the exam. There may be certain topics and subjects that one author or instructor may know how to communicate better than others and vice versa. And their style of writing, drawing diagrams and charts/tables may resonate more with one person than another.

Final word on preparation for the exam: If you really want to go in there and pass the test with flying colors, I suggest using one primary book for your studies, and one back-up to aid after you have finished reading this book. Then after you are finished, figure out what areas you feel least comfortable in and attack those aggressively; watch videos on the subjects (tons of free stuff on youtube etc), spend extra lab time (hands-on) on those topics, and with precision, tailor and design your studies to suit what you feel is needed for yourself; read more on those specific topics you feel you did not grasp very well, whether it be because you just didn't get it or felt the book didn't cover enough for you to get it. If you put the work in, you will pass the exam, this applies to whatever book you chose to use for your studies. It's very important you put the time in with hands-on exercises and practice as much as possible, this will solidify all the stuff you read and hear about.

After trying to prepare for the CCNA on my own I came to the conclusion that I needed a book if I were going to understand the material enough to receive my CCNA. Having seen Wendells books score high ratings I was going to purchase one of his until I read some of the excerpts from his book. With all due respect to Wendell his books were simply too dry for me. Then I checked out Lammle and discovered his books read as if somebody is actually talking to you, as if you're in a conversation with someone. Having purchased this book it's as immersive as reading a good story and you're learning the whole time.

Todd Lammle fully understands what Cisco expects you to know for your CCNA exam and the seller point for me is the fact that Lammle actually has a gift for teaching it. His book doesn't read as if hes just reguritating information to you but instead he writes to actually make sure you're understanding the material. (I've had professors in college teaching CCNA classes that couldn't do this. And for the record, this book is leaps and bounds better than any college class I've had on Cisco related information). Even if at some point he comes out of nowhere with new material he'll warn you about it and then he'll cover it later in depth. I have never at any point felt overwhelmed with the information in the book and he starts with the fundamentals, the building blocks of networking and goes in depth from there.

At the end of every chapter he'll have exam essays, written labs, and review questions to really make sure you understand the material (along with the CD provided). And to prove Todd wants you to know the material he even has a website you can go to and ask him questions on topics you don't fully understand, or if you feel he might be wrong about something in his book you can talk to him about it. If fact, if you check out other Lammle books on Amazon, you can see he comments on reviews left by others. That to me shows someone who's really dedicated to teaching the material and is someone I have a lot of respect for these days.

I absolutely recommend this study guide. You'll learn so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Testo eccezionale per chi avesse intenzione di avvicinarsi al mondo Cisco
Reviewed in Italy on February 4, 2013

3.0 out of 5 stars TROJAN
Reviewed in France on July 19, 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - a great buy for FE/HE students as well as CCNA
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 9, 2012
Extremely comprehensive yet imparts the information in a conversational, "human" way. Some reviewers have stated that the book is somewhat ambiguous but I wonder if that is just as a result of the subject matter being quite difficult? The book is seriously dense and the extent of what needs to be covered to achieve the CCNA qualification is daunting, but - hey - no one said professional networking was easy and Lammmle states clearing at the outset that the CompTIA Network+ certification, or equivalent, is recommended before proceeding with his book. Funnily enough there is a discrepancy between the UK reviews and those from 'across the pond' on the amazon.com site; the Americans seem to really love this book and I was glad I had read both sets of reviews before purchasing.
