Amazon.com Review

Microsoft Internet Information Server 4 and Proxy Server 2 are closely related products, but each requires its own administration skills. IIS 4 and Proxy Server 2 24Seven is an administration guide to both products. Although the publisher has targeted it toward advanced administrators, most with even moderate knowledge of the issues involved should find the text very readable.

The book is divided equally between IIS 4 and Proxy Server 2, with each section almost independent from the others. Some of the topics in the Proxy Server section do refer back to lessons learned in the previous IIS part. This administrator's tool focuses on installation and configuration of both products. Tutorial information on key subjects--such as subnetting IP addresses--is included, and occasional diagrams and screen shots illustrate architectures and configuration screens.

While this 24Seven title covers the key configuration settings for both products, there's little in the way of high-level system design issues. For example, while the book explains the different technical configurations of Proxy Server, there isn't a straightforward decision tree to guide the reader in making the basic configuration decisions. Nevertheless, if you are responsible for installing and managing either or both of these two products, this book is useful for day-to-day guidance. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: IIS architecture, IIS installation, FTP service, IIS Mail, IIS security, Certificate Server, News Service, Proxy Server architecture, Proxy Server installation, access management, and Proxy Server optimization/troubleshooting.

This book is for people who want to train other trainers. It is NOT for people who want to work with the actual products! It seems that instead of giving helpful, instructional details on the many unique configurations possible for IIS and Proxy Server, It focuses on BASIC configurations and THEORY. If I wanted THEORY (TCPIP, The Internet, etc), I would have purchased another book for these theoretical subjects. The 'snippets' of detail and 'case studies' do nothing for me. The case studies are simple and don't touch upon any detail that is usable in the real world. Much of what is written in this book insults my intelligence. I will most likely stay away from any 24-seven books.

Well written in terms that can be undersood by virtual beginners, but with the kind of details required by NT IIS administrators.
Covers most aspects of setting up a basic IIS server. Dips into more advanced subject such as ASP.
Only moan: needless typos in one or two places that may cause confusion for some readers.
